Is Hobbs & Shaw 2 Happening? Everything We Know

Hobbs & Shaw was a hit spinoff movie from the Fast & Furious franchise, but Hobbs & Shaw 2 hasn’t come to fruition. Will the sequel ever get made?
Although Hobbs & Shaw was a hit spinoff movie from the Fast & Furious franchise, Hobbs & Shaw 2 still has yet to come to fruition. Released in 2019, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham as mismatched special-ops mercenaries Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, respectively, who reluctantly team up to take down a cybernetically enhanced terrorist. The pair had been introduced separately in the Fast & Furious movies before they joined forces in a subplot of The Fate of the Furious, which acted as a sort of backdoor pilot for their spinoff franchise, Hobbs & Shaw.
After Hobbs & Shaw became a big success at the box office – grossing more than $760 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo) – Universal was quick to start work on a sequel. In November 2019, shortly after Hobbs & Shaw’s profitable box office run, producer Hiram Garcia announced (via ComicBook.com) that the studio was “extremely happy” with the film’s commercial performance and that they were “having conversations” about a sequel. But Hobbs & Shaw 2 still has yet to be produced, and Johnson and Statham have filled up their schedules with other projects. Will the Hobbs & Shaw sequel ever get made?
Hobbs & Shaw 2 Latest News
In December 2022, Kelly McCormick, the producing partner of Hobbs & Shaw director David Leitch, shared a disappointing update on Hobbs & Shaw 2. She said, “We would love to [make Hobbs & Shaw 2]. There’s no conversations at this time.” She explained that it’s all dependent on Dwayne Johnson’s hectic filming schedule: “Dwayne’s a really busy guy and, you know, he would be the one to motivate all of that. So, you know, we’re ready if he wants to.” Leitch and McCormick are eager to make Hobbs & Shaw 2, but Johnson needs to be available for the spinoff sequel to happen.
McCormick did mention that the door remains firmly open for a Hobbs & Shaw sequel. She said, “There were a lot of seeds planted” for future storylines in the first film. Hobbs & Shaw included cameo appearances by Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart — as CIA Agent Victor Locke and Air Marshal Dinkley, respectively — that could be expanded into more fleshed-out characters in Hobbs & Shaw 2. McCormick said that setting the table for sequel stories was “intentional, but not necessarily because we had plans in mind, just because it would be fun to have different players for them to play with [in a sequel].”
Hobbs & Shaw 2 Confirmed
Hiram Garcia, one of Dwayne Johnson’s partners and closest collaborators at Seven Bucks Productions, confirmed (via TheWrap) that Hobbs & Shaw 2 is in active development: “We never like to announce anything like that prematurely… but we are writing the story.” Since the script is still being developed, production could be a while away, but the sequel is happening. Garcia teased that Johnson and co. have a “very ambitious vision” for the Hobbs & Shaw sequel. When Johnson is available to start work on Hobbs & Shaw 2, Garcia said, “We have some huge, fun ideas of what we want to do with it.”
Hobbs & Shaw 2 Release Date InfoWhen asked about the delays to Hobbs & Shaw 2 (via CinemaBlend), Johnson explained that every movie he takes on has to have what he describes as “the Moses Effect,” which means an incoming project has “the ability to push all the other projects to the side” and take top priority. He named Red Notice, Jungle Cruise, and Black Adam as three movies that had the Moses Effect that caused him to clear his schedule to make them happen. If Hobbs & Shaw 2 doesn’t have the Moses Effect, it’ll remain in development hell indefinitely.
Johnson has a couple of other projects on the docket before he can start work on Hobbs & Shaw 2. His next movie, the Christmas-themed action comedy Red One, is set for release on Prime Video in the holiday season of 2023. From a script by Chris Morgan, who wrote Hobbs & Shaw and various other Fast & Furious films, Red One will star Johnson as Callum Drift opposite Chris Evans as Jack O’Malley, J.K. Simmons as Santa Claus, and Bonnie Hunt as Mrs. Claus. Johnson has also signed on to reprise his role as the demigod Maui in a live-action remake of Disney’s Moana.
The Rock generally headlines one to two tentpole movies a year, with a couple of supporting roles and cameos in between. If Hobbs & Shaw 2 is his next starring vehicle after the Moana remake, then the earliest it could be released is 2025. After his 2023 releases, Fast X, Meg 2: The Trench, and The Expendables 4, Statham is set to star in The Beekeeper, an action film from Suicide Squad director David Ayer, which will likely aim for a 2024 release. If Johnson lines up Hobbs & Shaw 2 for a 2025 release date, Statham should be available to join him.
Hobbs & Shaw 2 Cast
Since Hobbs & Shaw 2 isn’t officially going ahead yet, a cast hasn’t been announced for the sequel, but it’s possible to speculate based on who starred in the first movie. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham would be expected to reprise their roles in Hobbs & Shaw 2, given that their characters’ names are in the title. Producer Kelly McCormick hinted that Ryan Reynolds or Kevin Hart could bring back their characters from the first Hobbs & Shaw movie for larger roles in the sequel. Hobbs & Shaw originally featured a Keanu Reeves cameo, so the John Wick star could also pop up in Hobbs & Shaw 2 instead.
The extended families of both Hobbs and Shaw were featured prominently in the first film, from Cliff Curtis and Roman Reigns as Hobbs’s brothers to Vanessa Kirby and Helen Mirren as Shaw’s sister and mother, respectively. They could all return in Hobbs & Shaw 2, even if it’s just for brief cameos. In a Facebook Q&A, Dwayne Johnson said the Hobbs & Shaw sequel would introduce new characters to the ensemble. Vin Diesel has said that he’d like Robert Downey Jr. to join the Fast & Furious franchise, while Michelle Rodriguez named Matt Damon (via Variety), so either of them could make their franchise debut in Hobbs & Shaw 2.
Hobbs & Shaw 2 Story Details
While the plot synopsis for Hobbs & Shaw 2 is being kept under wraps, development of a story treatment is well underway. Dwayne Johnson pitched a Hobbs & Shaw 2 story idea that will subvert the expectations of a Fast & Furious movie. He explained, “There’s an idea that I had that I called [Universal Pictures chairwoman] Donna Langley… and I said, ‘I have this idea and this direction for [Hobbs & Shaw 2],’ and I pitched.” Johnson has described his pitch for the sequel as “the quintessential Hobbs movie.”
Johnson also said that his concept for Hobbs & Shaw 2 will be “the antithesis of what Fast & Furious movies generally are in that they continue to go on and go on and go on.” It sounds like Johnson is envisioning a Logan-style finale that will definitively conclude Hobbs’s on-screen journey. Ever since his debut in Fast Five, Hobbs has been characterized as an invincible superman who has escaped death countless times. In Hobbs & Shaw 2, Johnson explains, “you watch a man walk off into the sunset.” If he doesn’t go down in a blaze of glory in the sequel, he’ll at least retire.
